"Kate" Welcomes Her Guests More than 1,000 visitors came to see the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center during Sunday's (Sept. 6) Open House. They toured inside and outside, upstairs and downstairs—they went into the theater and sat in the chairs—they went up on the mezzanine and looked down onto the stage. Create 1000 Cranes for Peace Today Children ages 4 to 9 are invited to the Clayhouse for a free storytelling hour to hear the tale of Sadako and the Thousand Cranes and Japanese folktales on Sunday, Dec. 13, at 3 p.m. Leslie Concannon will read the story of Sadako, which is about a young girl in Japan who develops leukemia following the bombing of Hiroshima.

Movie Traces History of "The Kate" In anticipation of next week's Opening Gala Week of the Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center in Old Saybrook, "The Kate" offers the opportunity this Saturday, Oct. 10, to view a wonderful movie produced by Old Saybrook resident Bob Czepiel, which documents the history of "The Kate" from its construction in 1911 as a theater through its varied life as a town hall, grammar school, court of law, basketball court, jail and bank. Authors Present Book Detailing "A Postcard History" of Old Saybrook at the Library, Saturday The Acton Public Library, Old Saybrook, will host a book signing by former First Selectman Barbara J. Gallery One, Clayhouse Receive People’s Choice Award from 'Paul & Lisa' On Friday, Dec. 11, Gallery One and the Clayhouse were presented with the People’s Choice Award for best Xtreme Tree 2009 created for the benefit of the Paul & Lisa Program located in Essex. The award-wining tree was titled “Pieces for Peace: Collage and Clay” and was one of 13 unusual fantasy sculptures of trees created by area galleries, artists, architects, designers and others, which were exhibited at the Left Bank Gallery for the month of November. Kate's Play at "The Kate" Dazzles Old Saybrook's newly opened Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center—now generally known as “The Kate”—paid homage to its actress namesake in “The Philadelphia Story” by Philip Barry on Oct. 12. This farce, set in the 1930s, launched Katharine Hepburn to stardom, running for 415 performances on Broadway. Lyme Colony Artist's Recently Discovered Pastels on View The Florence Griswold Museum's new exhibition, "Visions of Mood: Henry C. White Pastels," is on view through July 12. White was a Lyme Colony artist and patriarch of a family of Connecticut artists. Curtain Up at “The Kate” in 2009 Today is the start of a new year and 2009 promises to be a banner year in Old Saybrook. The Katharine Hepburn Cultural Arts Center is slated for a "soft" opening in the summer and a gala launch in October.
